What You Will DoAs the Vice President of Engineering, you will play a crucial role in managing day-to-day engineering operations across our organization and assisting the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) with both strategic and tactical initiatives. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will have Engineering Team Leads as your direct reports. You will collaborate with many stakeholders across the company, including Product, Sales, Marketing and Operations.
Your responsibilities will include:- Managing and mentoring Engineering Team Leads, focusing on their motivation, management skills, performance, objectives, and career paths.
- Overseeing and executing the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Product Iterations (PIs) for all engineering teams in collaboration with the Product Management team.
- Ensuring effective collaboration across engineering teams and with other company functions.
- Acting as an intermediary between engineering teams and executive management, especially the CTO.
- Assisting the CTO with strategic planning, technical leadership and executive reporting.
- Participating in due diligence and company integration work in mergers and acquisitions.
Some of your daily tasks will include:- Overseeing the execution of Product Iterations (PIs) across teams.
- Participating in team meetings and SDLC-related ceremonies on demand.
- Keeping track of weekly status reports from engineering teams and facilitating discussions around important points in the engineering meeting.
- Communicating the most important engineering updates to the executive team.
Managing People:- Maintaining regular 1-on-1s with engineering team leads, discussing both individual and team topics.
- Carrying out performance evaluations of team leads and ensuring adoption of the performance review process in accordance with the career framework across the engineering organization.
- Setting personal objectives for every team lead.
- Managing vacation approvals, sick leave, conference days, and similar for team leads.
Help Shape the Engineering Organization:- Preparing high-level engineering documentation and policies for review by CTO.
- Giving feedback on engineering workflows, policies, and efforts.
- Leading the weekly engineering meeting.
Collaboration with Other Parties:- Maintaining regular 1-on-1s with CTO and COO.
- Participating in executive meetings and other executive group activities on demand.
- Coordinating with Product and HR.
- Representing engineering in high-value sales calls, quarterly business reviews and escalated support cases.
- Helping with sales enablement and related training.
Hiring and Onboarding:- Preparing onboarding expectations for team leads.
- Onboarding new team leads, pairing with team members for those unfamiliar with the technical domain.
- Drafting job specifications for management positions.
- Participating in late-stage interviews for various positions or leading hiring efforts for management positions.
About You We're seeking a seasoned software engineering manager with:- Multiple years of experience leading software engineering teams and/or middle managers in different organizations.
- A strong technical background. Experience with developer tools, backend technologies is a plus.
- Strong coordination and communication skills to coordinate work and share information effectively among different groups and stakeholders.
- A willingness to receive and provide feedback, including constructive criticism in pursuit of our core values and a culture of high performance.
- A good business sense to participate in strategic discussions and prioritize high impact projects.
